News and Announcements
We are very excited to announce that we will be offering a modified summer swimming programming in accordance with the BC Ministry Health and ViaSport Return to Play guidelines and safety protocols.
We believe our Steveston Outdoor Pool provides the ideal environment for social distancing, while allowing children in our community to benefit from some much-needed physical activity. However, our summer programming will not be open to all levels as a result of current restrictions and available pool space.
We ask that you read through the attached Kigoos Return to Swim Plan. The information outlined in this guide is designed to assist the Kigoos Board of Directors, families and coaches. This guide will be a “living document”, that is updated regularly as new information becomes available.
On behalf of the coaching staff and club executive I want to send everyone my very best wishes and assure you that safety and wellbeing is the number one priority of the club during this time.
While I sincerely hope that everyone is staying safe, healthy, and in good spirits, it is with great sadness that I reflect on the postponement of this year’s summer swim season. Like many other Kigoos, much of my life has revolved around summer swimming, and it feels strange not spending May 1st preparing for the first practice of the year as I have for the past 21 years. From the early mornings spent at the pool, to the weekends surrounded by excited kids and cheering parents, BCSSA has always been one of the most important aspects of my life, and therefore May 1st will always be a special day for me. I am thinking of each of you today.
While it is sad that we cannot be together at Steveston pool today, one reason why swimming is so great is the fact that it is a lifelong sport. No athlete’s experience is defined by one season, and I hope this time away from the pool makes you look forward to having the ability to train, compete and participate in swimming once again soon.
The coaches have put together some exercises and we encourage you to stay active during this time. While we cannot train together at the pool, this time of isolation lends opportunities to practice other critical aspects of swimming which we often don’t have time to focus on in our short summer season. For those of you looking for ways to improve your swimming, I encourage you to work on your flexibility and focus on swimming related exercises. Stretching to improve flexibility and performing swimming related movements using exercise bands are some of the best ways to improve swimming technique and can easily be done at home.
In my time as a Kigoo I have learned that there is nothing our community cannot overcome. This is not the first time we have been without access to our pool as many of you will remember the 2016 season when Steveston pool was closed for maintenance. Despite the many challenges we faced that season, we adapted and stayed strong as a club which I know is exactly what we are capable of doing now. As Kigoos we are working to face this pandemic together. I am proud to be a Kigoo and proud of our community.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out at any time. I hope to see you all soon and in the meantime I wish you well.
Dear Kigoos Families,
Due to the ongoing global Covid-19 pandemic, it is with deepest regret that the Richmond Kigoos Board of Directors have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 summer swim season. This decision has been made after the announcement by the BCSSA to cancel the 2020 Provincial Championships at UBC and in consultation with Fraser South Regional swim clubs.
Our Board of Directors have chosen to provide full refunds for all fees paid for summer registrations. Refunds to families will be issued by cheque regardless of your payment remittance in order to avoid additional processing fees and it will be mailed to the address you provided on your registration form.
Our registrar and treasurer are working to provide refunds as quickly as possible and ask for your patience. If you have not received your refund cheque by April 30th, please contact our treasurer by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Optimistically, we would love to see all of our swimmers back in the pool. If we are able to offer a summer season, we hope to provide a condensed program and look forward to welcoming all of our Kigoos families back at that time. As of right now, this decision does not impact our winter Tsunami programming.
The Board of Directors would like to acknowledge Coach Emmy and our 2020 coaches and extend our appreciation for their dedication to our Kigoos Swim Club.
In closing as we approach the long weekend and many of our families celebrate Passover and Easter, let us also be grateful to those keeping us safe, those working to maintain essential services, and those doing their best to control this pandemic. Thank you for your patience and understanding in the weeks ahead.
Kigoos Board of Directors
Hello Kigoos Families,
At our recent AGM, we thanked Chris Kennedy for being an integral leader to our Kigoos Swim Club, first as a director and then as our Co-President for the last 6.5 years. He has been vital in reminding us to live up to our club’s core philosophy of being a “summer club that swims”. We would also like to acknowledge Andrea Nishi for her thoughtful and dedicated service as Co-President. Andrea’s calm, encouraging nature has been a tremendous asset to the mentorship of our coaches and new parents. On behalf of our new Board of Directors, we would like to express our gratitude to Chris and Andrea for their professionalism and tireless work to support our kids and Kigoos families.
As your newly elected president, I wanted to provide our families with a few updates. Over the past few weeks, it’s become clear that the world is facing an unprecedented challenge. With the outbreak of COVID-19, our Board of Directors have been focused on the wellbeing of our swimmers, coaches, and our families. Yesterday, many of you should have also received an email directly from the Danny Shilds, President of the BCSSA. In summary, the BCSSA shared with us details about the cancellation of the upcoming Coaching Conference and the uncertainty of our summer swimming season.
They shared with us the following information:
- Take care of yourself and your families, including your swim family.
- We recommend that all clubs postpone their paid registrations until we are closer to May 1st.
- A Board Member is talking to Active about their refund policy yet these talks are difficult with so many businesses now closed or on a work from home regimen but in the meantime, postpone any paid registrations.
- Our Kigoos Swim Club has also contacted Active (our online registration provider) regarding processing refunds. At this time, we ask that you please remain patient with our registration process knowing that our Board of Directors is re-evaluating the situation as it relates to the season
- Stay in communication with your City Recreation Dept but remember, they can’t predict what is going to happen.
- Plan for the season but be aware, the season could be shortened, or modified.
- The BCSSA Board of Directors will communicate any information we learn and will be giving decisions or recommendations in late April about the upcoming season.
- The health and safety of our Kigoos families is critically important to us. We understand that this may be a stressful time and so we are committed to keeping you informed.
Please feel free to reach out to me directly, or to any one of our Executive members for any support you may need.
