Kigoos Swim Club

About Our Coaches

Cody Denoon (Head Coach, Senior A)
I'm excited to return to Kigoos to dust off my Head Coach cap. This will be my 5th year with the Kigoos and the terrific traditions associated with it. We're hoping for a great season as we kick off our swim club's second 50 years.
This is my 20th year in BCSSA and my 12th of coaching. I trained at WRASA (as a swimmer and a coach) under Carole Gair, who led us to six Provincial Championships and who has coached BCSSA swimmers for every one of its 51 years.
I'm currently a law student at UBC with a degree in Greek and Roman Studies. I've travelled to many countries around the world, including riding a horse across Mongolia.
I grew up in summer swimming and it's given me happy memories and lifelong friends. Swimming has taught me lessons about striving to achieve my best—and though some of them were tough lessons, I'll always value them.
I'm looking forward to working with a wonderful coaching staff. Many of them were members of my first Coaching Brigade, and I'm very proud of them.
I know the Kigoos share my enthusiasm and love for competitive summer swimming. We'll work hard together this summer to show what Kigoos spirit and dedication can accomplish.

Benji Hutton (Senior B)
Hi everybody—I'm glad to be back at Kigoos to coach the Senior B's this summer. I've been a part of BCSSA for over 18 years, 4 of those coaching, and can definitely say I've loved every moment of it.
I'm looking forward to a fast and competitive season. The Kigoos mean business, and I intend to capitalize on that, and of course have a bit of fun too.
Swim your hearts out, guys, and set no limits! See you on deck.

Matt Girard (Intermediate A)
I have swum with the Kigoos for fourteen years now, and coached for the last three. In that time I have developed a love for the club and the sport of competitive swimming which will last my lifetime.
I have acquired a lot of practical experience and knowledge from coaching for the Kigoos and for my old high school, and from working as a lifeguard for the city of Abbotsford. I have obtained my NCCP Level 1 and am working towards a degree in Human Kinetics at UBC.
I plan to bring back everything that worked well in the Intermediate A group last year, as well as some new ideas. I am dedicated to the success of everyone in the club and want to see everyone reach their full potential. See you poolside!

Sean Connacher (Intermediate B)
I'm currently a student at Queen’s University. I've been a swimmer with the Richmond Kigoos for 13 years now and this will be my third year as a coach. I'm extremely excited to be coaching this summer, and I'm looking forward to seeing each and every swimmer in my group progress throughout the season.
If you have any questions or concerns, or would just like to socialize, I'm very approachable and always enjoy seeing new and familiar faces.

Liam Finlay (Junior A)
It's my pleasure to be back for another summer with the Richmond Kigoos! This summer season will be be my 4th year as a coach and my 10th as a swimmer.
The Kigoos have been a huge part of my life, and over the years I have come to really love the fun, friendly, hard-working atmosphere that can be felt in and around the pool. As a coach, I'm a strong believer in encouragement and stroke correction on an individual basis as well as running practices at a high level of intensity, getting the most out of the short amount of time we have every practice.
Unfortunately, I will not be around for the first few weeks of the season as I'm currently finishing off the academic year at university in the UK. However, on my return, I'm very much looking forward to seeing everyone again, meeting new swimmers, and making the most of what I'm sure will be another wonderful season. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

Heather Price (Junior A)
Hi Kigoos—I'm very excited to be back this summer helping out with the Junior A's for the month of May. I'm really looking forward to seeing all returning Kigoos again and meeting some new ones too!
I've been coaching summer swimming since 2002, and love it more and more each summer. After my break from the pool last year to pursue a pharmacy internship, I'm ready to get my feet wet again and help young, enthusiastic swimmers achieve their potential!

Jenn Christie (Junior B)
I began with synchronized swimming, but after being introduced to the competitive nature and fun-loving atmosphere of swimming with the Richmond Kigoos, I soon dedicated my summer months to competitive swimming.
I just completed my second year at UBCO and am excited to be transferring to UBC-Van in the fall to continue my studies closer to home. For the past 12 years I shared my time between Kigoos and dancing at the Arts Connection, and have grown to love both.
The past two years I co-produced the Kigoos Year-End Video with Matt Girard and am looking forward to working on it with him again this year. I coached the Steveston-London swim team for two years and have volunteered with the Kigoos for a number of years.
I'm excited to be working with Andrew coaching the Junior B swimmers this summer! See you at the pool, Junior B's!!

Andrew Christie (Junior B)

Hello Kigoos! I'm excited to be back for my third year coaching and my thirteenth year with the club. I'm swamped with school and rowing right now, but my sister Jenn will be coaching the Junior B's until I can return full-time. Hope to see you at the pool soon!

Cameron Howie (Intermediate/Development)
Hi everyone! For those of you who don't know me, I've been swimming with the Kigoos for seven years, and have been a provincial qualifier in six of those. I've volunteered with the club for three years. Last year I coached the JD Bronze group, and I loved every minute of it. With Kigoos, I've to come love the sport, have met lifelong friends, and have developed skills that I know will help me over the years to come.
I'm currently in Grade 10 at St. George's in Vancouver, where I'm on the school rowing team. I was also on the school swim team, where I earned three gold medals and helped my school achieve its 9th consecutive victory at the high school provincials.
This summer is all about developing proper technique, improving time, and most importantly—having fun! I plan on bringing back things that worked well last summer and winter, as well as new things I've picked up from the other great coaches I've worked with since then. I've got lots of fun activities planned, and I hope you're all as excited as I am! See you on deck!

Micaela Millar (Junior Development "Gold")
I'm excited to say that this is my eighth season with the Richmond Kigoos. Not many people would think that getting up at 5:30 every morning, hanging out at pools all day, and working their hardest is exactly fun, but that's how we swimmers roll.
Throughout each season, I've been able to learn from my coaches and develop a lot of my own knowledge. Completing my lifeguarding courses has also helped enrich my knowledge of water safety and instruction.
My goal for this season is for my swimmers to develop a love of swimming that will last a lifetime, a foundation of skills and techniques that they can build on as they grow, learn, and improve, and confidence as swimmers that will drive them to work hard and achieve.
Let's have a rocking season. See you on the pool deck!

Ella Koonar (Junior Development "Silver")
Howdy y'all! This is my fifth year swimming with the Kigoos and it has definitely been a great way to spend my summers. Coaching the 2009-2010 Tsunami season was so much fun and I'm excited for the summer season to get started.
I hope the JD's in my group will enjoy their Kigoos experience and along the way develop solid technique in all their strokes. It's going to be a great season and I'm so excited to get underway. See you on deck!

Nadia Dale (Junior Development "Bronze")
I've been swimming with the Kigoos for seven years and volunteer coaching for the last three. I count myself incredibly lucky to have had this summer swimming experience growing up. The Kigoos are like my family, and Steveston Pool is a second home. From the morning practices, to swimming in the rain, the social events as well as the permanent eau de chlorine—I've enjoyed every minute of it.
From a coaching point of view, my goal is for all swimmers to develop solid technique as well as racing strategies for the more competitive aspects of summer swimming. I aspire that all swimmers will develop a love for the sport and a love for the club as I have. My philosophy? Work hard, have fun—just keep swimming.
“Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming. What do we do? We swim, swim, swim...” – Dori, Finding Nemo
See you on deck!

Julia Morris (Junior Development "Bronze")
I'm very proud to say that I've been part of this wonderful Kigoos family for seven years—which is, surprisingly, half my life. All the fun gatherings, team spirit, group activities and all-around enthusiasm make this club like no other. I couldn't imagine a summer without being involved in Kigoos and to be honest, I don't know what I'd do if my summer wasn't filled up with swimming, complete with 5:45 a.m. practices and permanent bathing-suit tan all year round.
Literally living at Steveston Pool is what I've grown to love. My goal for my swimmers is that they develop a strong foundation and basic techniques and skills so that by the end of the season they're confident and ready to go further.
My philosophy is simple: Do what you love, love what you do. To put 100% effort into something, you need determination, passion and perseverance.
I know we'll have a great season and I can't wait to get out there and start having fun! See you guys soon!
